Christmas peace is present again in our good old Tallinn. More clearly than in other times, we feel the need to be with the dearest at the arrival of Christmas, share with each other the light and joy from our soul.
Like already during the centuries, also this year, Town Hall Square becomes the central point of the Christmas festivities. No state of the art shopping centre can replace the feeling of direct communication and being together which joins us in this Christmas market. The Christmas market – at the same time modern and old – provides besides our local selection of goods also action to the whole family, from the little ones to great grandparents. Sympathetic Santa Claus listens to the rhymes of children and distributes candies, the elves peep from the shadow of the Christmas tree and there will be interesting performances on the market stage from the midday to evening hours.
This year the activities of the Christmas market expand also to the skating rink in Harju Street, Liberty and Rotermann Square and Park Tammsaare. That way the holiday spirit and joy is shared with more people of Tallinn and guests.
It is Christmas time – time for hope, understanding and forgiving. Let’s enjoy together the darkest yet brightest time of winter here in the Christmas market, under the Christmas tree in Town Hall Square.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Yes, you are right, the sheep Villi, Volli and Salli will be present this year as well! I wonder what kind of stories they are going to tell us? Surely they have seen a thing or two during the year. If you sit still and look them quietly in the eye, they can truly tell you a tale. Villi, Volli and Salli will be at the Christmas Market from 17 December to 27 December. Come, check them out!

The latest news is that Dolli and Malli decided to join other sheep! They are waiting for you!

Town Hall Square is said to be the site of the world’s first Christmas tree, which formed part of a ritual begun in 1441, when unmarried merchants sang and danced with the town’s girls around a tree, which they then burned. Today the tradtion has changed a bit. The trees that will be decorated, will be given away as christmas presents to the ones in need.
Nobody really remembers exactly how the tradition of decorating fir trees came about, but despite that countless Christmas trees are hung with pretty things every Christmastime in Estonia and all across the world.
There are really no rules and thus it is so exciting to see how different people go about it, what creative solutions can be used in order to make each tree special.
What could be more exciting than to see how our favourite performers, artists, musicians and others are decorating the Christmas tree. Last year the singer Katrin Karisma-Krumm and the youth band Bedwetters were among those who displayed their talents in the contest. This year’s Christmas tree decorators are still a secret – so come and find out! Be sure to bring a camera. This could be a perfect opportunity to get a good shot for the Christmas Market Photo Contest.
Christmas Tree Decorating Contest takes place on Town Hall Square on 19 December.

For the 9th year in a row Town Hall Square is about to be set to get into the Christmas spirit.
The heart of the Old Town is about to be filled once again with Estonia’s best handicrafts specialists and traders, serving both townsfolk and visitors alike. The Christmas market on the square has become something of a winter festival – more than just buying and selling, it features a rich cultural programme, too.

Town Hall Square is said to be the site of the world’s first Christmas tree, which formed part of a ritual begun in 1441, when unmarried merchants sang and danced with the town’s girls around a tree, which they then burned.

We are ready to greet you on November 29 when Tallinn mayor will officially open Tallinn Christmas Market and the first advent candle is lit.

Tallinn Christmas Makret will be open every day from 9AM till 7PM from Nov 29 2009 till Jan 7 2010.

The Christmas market has a kind of pull, drawing people in – townsfolk, their friends and acquaintances – to experience that pre-Christmas joy like one big family. We are all part of that family, whether we are the craftsmen, the traders, the townsfolk, the tourists or the singers and dancers on stage. All of us together.

We would like to invite you all to be part of that joy of Christmas here with us on Town Hall Square. Enjoy the Christmas market and cultural programme!

Welcome!
